Background of the study
TikTok has emerged as a dominant social media platform in Nigeria, particularly noted for its lip‑sync videos that showcase creative phonetic expressions. Users manipulate pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm to create engaging content, often employing exaggerated articulatory styles that deviate from standard speech patterns (Ibrahim, 2023). The viral nature of hashtags further amplifies these phonetic innovations as trends spread rapidly across the platform. These digital practices lead to measurable phonetic variation, which reflects both the influence of global digital culture and local dialectal features. This study investigates how viral hashtags within TikTok lip‑sync challenges contribute to phonetic variation among Nigerian users. It examines the interplay between digital editing tools, performance aesthetics, and social influences, documenting emergent sound patterns and their divergence from conventional norms. By exploring these phenomena, the research aims to provide insights into the mechanisms of digital phonetic innovation and the implications for everyday speech in Nigeria (Okafor, 2024). The study situates its inquiry within the broader framework of digital sociophonetics, emphasizing the transformative role of social media in reshaping linguistic articulation.

Statement of the problem
While TikTok lip‑sync trends have garnered massive popularity, there is limited research on their impact on phonetic variation among Nigerian users. Existing studies often focus on the visual elements of TikTok without examining the subtle yet significant changes in pronunciation and speech patterns induced by digital performance. This gap hinders our understanding of how digital tools and viral trends interact to produce new phonetic norms, impeding the integration of these findings into traditional phonetic models (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the study

  1. To analyze phonetic variations in TikTok lip‑sync videos among Nigerian users.
  2. To determine the role of viral hashtags in driving these variations.
  3. To compare digital phonetic innovations with conventional speech patterns.

Research questions

  1. What phonetic variations are evident in Nigerian TikTok lip‑sync videos?
  2. How do viral hashtags influence these phonetic changes?
  3. How do the observed variations compare with traditional phonetic norms?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it illuminates the impact of digital trends on phonetic variation in Nigerian social media, offering fresh insights into the evolution of speech in the digital era. Its findings will be valuable for linguists and media scholars interested in the intersection of technology and phonetics.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing TikTok lip‑sync videos among Nigerian users; it does not extend to other platforms or offline speech practices.

Definitions of terms

  • Phonetic Variation: Differences in the production of speech sounds.
  • Lip‑Sync Videos: Digital videos where users mimic audio content.
  • Digital Phonetics: The study of speech sound patterns in digital media.
